Colonel Bee was in New York City at the Astor House. Vice-President Henry Wilson was also at the Astor House. President Grant was at the Fifth-avenue Hotel.
New York Times (1857-1922). Apr 2, 1873. p. 7 (1 page)

Vice-President Henry Wilson, " In May 1873, the sixty-one-year-old Wilson suffered a stroke that caused him to lose control of his facial muscles and to speak thickly whenever fatigued. Although doctors ordered him to rest, the advice went against his nature. A friend wrote, 'You know he was never still for five minutes, and it is more difficult for him than for most persons to sit quietly and dream away the time.' After spending the summer recuperating in Massachusetts, Wilson traveled to Washington in December for the opening of the new Congress, but by January his poor health forced him to return home once again. Instead of presiding over the Senate, he spent his time writing a multi-volume history of the rise and fall of the slave power, memorializing his own role in the great events of the Civil War and Reconstruction."

"Pushing Things A gentleman from Tenino and beyond informs us that Contractor Montgomery is hurrying things forward on the Northern Pacific Railroad. Mr. Harry Davis has the new mill near Tenino running both day and night. Three other large saw mills are in process of construction and will be ready to operate in the course of a few weeks. After the first six miles of railroad beyond Tenino are completed, the track laying will progress very rapidly. For that distance six miles- the road will require almost one continual stretch of trestle work."

From March 19, 2013 email, "Thank you for your inquiry and research request of Kelley House. You wanted to know if Jerome Bursley Ford , the Mendocino Lumber Company and their associates were working with the German government and companies to buy land in Samoa. You referenced several names and companies in your request and were interested in the time period of 1868-1878. Search of Mr. Ford's diaries and journals did not indicate any connections. The originals of those diaries are archived at the Bancroft Library at Berkeley. There is no reference to any German connections either. Our other records do not mention the names and companies you asked about except Godeffroy and Sillem. Godeffroy and Sillem represented the Fords and the Mendocino Lumber Company to obtain absconded funds from Henry Meiggs, the original mill owner. When Jerome Ford was involved, Mr. Meiggs left town with $400,000 in assets without paying Mr. Ford. That debt was subsequently paid through negotiations with Godffroy and Sillem and John Alder Saknas Freundt Freundt. Jerome Ford was also a founder of the Bank of Mendocino and the Mendocino Discount Bank. As a matter of note, a mill town north of Eureka California is named Samoa and they had a thriving mill there. Perhaps that is your link. Nancy Freeze, Executive Director, Kelley House Museum"
